What is an inclusive, accessible, innovative cultural economy?

The Punjab Cultural Project is a social collective building an inclusive, accessible and innovative cultural economy in Punjab.

Let’s unpack what those terms - inclusive, accessible, and innovative - mean to us at PCP, how they connect to our stated goals, and how our actions will help meet those goals of building a strong cultural economy in Punjab.

Inclusive

An inclusive cultural economy welcomes every interpretation and version of cultural or creative product or service, and where every creator and cultural entrepreneur feels able to legitimately and safely participate.

Accessible

An accessible cultural economy is one where creators and consumers have ample platforms and opportunities to engage. Think of it like a free market where cultural and creative products and services  — be they tangible or intangible  — can find an audience and a fair price along with a legitimate exchange of value.

Innovative

An innovative cultural economy is not stuck in a rut, or confined to limited interpretations of what constitutes culture and creativity. It is a society that equally values both traditional forms and bold innovations in culture and creativity. It is cultural and creative products and services that resonate with not just local but also global audiences and marketplaces.

This is the kind of cultural economy that inspires our goals at the Punjab Cultural Project.

Through our activities, we aim to:

  1. Build the foundational ecosystem for a cultural economy that contributes to economic development in Punjab

  2. Mobilize resources and support for cultural entrepreneurs to connect, collaborate, and capitalize their enterprises

  3. Enable all citizens to access and engage with diverse cultural and creative experiences

Each of our activities is intentionally designed to support our three goals:

  1. Conversations: efforts such as The PCP Dialogues Series fosters important conversations around the cultural economy of Punjab

  2. Opportunities: Facilitate and curate state, local and community-level events and marketplaces across cultural and creative domains

  3. Support: Spotlight and mobilize fellowships, grants, and residencies to support cultural entrepreneurs

  4. Research and advocacy: Represent the interests of Punjab’s cultural economy on national and international platforms

  5. Documentation: Chronicle the stories behind the artists and entrepreneurs powering Punjab’s evolving cultural economy
