About the featured artwork:

“Birth of an Artist” is a series of my work which represents the life circle of artist who survives against all odds and blooms in severe conditions. Hailing from agricultural background in Punjab, I use Grain of Wheat in my art works as it is one of staple crop. This series of work depicts germination of WHEAT Grain - A symbol of abundance, life, and fertility. Wheat is associated with Rebirth. This is due to a fairly straightforward aspect of the grain’s nature; when wheat sprouts from the soil after the barren season and grows into the mass of stalks that feed the people throughout the year, it’s easy to see the phenomenon as new life emerging from the throes of death. We all have experienced ups and downs in life, with positive attitude we overcome negativities. The material used is wood. Watching crops in fields in childhood then I moved to Chandigarh, a city beautifully designed by Corbusier, at very young age. Chandigarh city has grid street plan, which is a type of city plan in which streets run at right angles to each other, forming a grid which inspired me. As I imagine this grid plan as urban fields in which buildings came up instead of crops. In the starting of my career I used to work on geometrical shapes inspired from this city. Then after I started to add wheat grain in geometrical compositions. After my Post Graduation in sculpture I carved only grain of wheat, eliminating the geometrical form in some composition. It appealed to me and then I started working only on grain of wheat till date.
